How to Take Your Measurements for a Bespoke Suit at Home
One of the most common questions we receive at Bespoke By Omar Najam is: "How do I send my measurements if I'm in the UK, USA, or Canada?" The answer is simpler than most people expect — and getting it right makes the difference between a suit that fits beautifully and one that needs alterations.
This guide walks you through exactly how to take your measurements at home, what each measurement means, and the common mistakes to avoid.
What You'll Need
- A soft measuring tape (the kind used for sewing — not a builder's tape measure)
- A well-fitting shirt and trousers to wear while measuring
- A friend or family member to help — some measurements are impossible to take accurately alone

The Key Measurements
1. Chest
Wrap the tape around the fullest part of your chest, just under your arms and across your shoulder blades. Keep the tape horizontal and snug but not tight. Do not puff your chest out.
Common mistake: Measuring too high (across the shoulders) or too low (across the stomach).
2. Waist
Measure around your natural waist — the narrowest part of your torso, usually about 2–3 inches above your belly button. Stand naturally; do not suck in.
3. Hips / Seat
Measure around the fullest part of your seat, keeping the tape horizontal. This is typically 7–9 inches below your natural waist.
4. Shoulder Width
Measure from the end of one shoulder to the end of the other, across the back. It helps to have someone find the shoulder end point for you.

5. Jacket Length
Measure from the top of your shoulder (at the base of your neck) down to where you want the jacket to end — typically where your fingers naturally curl when your arms hang at your sides.
6. Sleeve Length
Measure from the top of your shoulder to your wrist bone, with your arm slightly bent. The jacket sleeve should end approximately half an inch above your shirt cuff.
7. Trouser Inseam
Measure from your crotch seam to the bottom of your ankle. Easiest to take from a pair of well-fitting trousers you already own — lay them flat and measure along the inner leg seam.
8. Trouser Outseam
Measure from your natural waist down to where you want the trouser hem to sit — just touching the top of your shoe for a standard break.
9. Thigh
Measure around the fullest part of your thigh, keeping the tape snug but not tight.

The Easiest Method — WhatsApp Us
At Bespoke By Omar Najam, our preferred method for overseas customers is to take measurements via WhatsApp. Send us a message and we will guide you through each measurement in real time — it takes about 10 minutes and ensures we capture everything correctly before cutting a single piece of fabric.
Tips for Getting Accurate Measurements
- Wear the clothing you would wear under the suit while measuring
- Stand naturally — not to attention or slouching
- Measure twice to confirm before sending
- Note your height and weight — even if approximate, these help verify proportions
- Tell us your fit preference — slim, regular, or relaxed
What Happens After You Send Your Measurements
Once we receive your measurements, our team in Lahore confirms them within 24 hours. The garment is then cut, stitched, and quality-checked before being shipped directly to your address. Delivery typically takes 3–4 weeks from order confirmation.
